Tactics for Recruiting HighQuality Temporary Workers
Recognising the skills required by temporary workers
and then actually identifying and recruiting these
individuals are two entirely separate, and often
challenging, tasks. So how can employers recruit
for high-quality contingent workers with the right
behavioural fit, whilst still operating at pace?
Define ‘Good’ Behaviour for Each Role
Before commencing hiring activity, employers should
identify the traits that matter most to them and the role
in question, and use this information to craft detailed
profiles for each position. For a Warehouse Operative,
for example, resilience and organisation may be nonnegotiable, whereas someone in Customer Service
should be able to display genuine empathy and a teamcentred approach. Once identified, align these traits with
the company values and the ways that teams typically
interact, so that every hire reinforces the environment the
organisation wants to promote and sustain. An effective
method of doing this is to involve team leaders and highperforming existing employees in this process to ensure
the set benchmarks feel both realistic and practical.
Use Behavioural Interviewing Techniques
Rather than relying solely on experience and
qualifications, employers or recruiters should use
questions that offer deeper insights and truly reveal
how a candidate thinks and reacts, particularly under
pressure. Using a behavioural approach, candidates
might be asked to describe a time when they had to
adjust quickly to a new procedure or to explain how
they resolved a conflict with a colleague, for example.
But, by focusing on their thought processes and
reflections, organisations uncover patterns in problemsolving, decision-making and interpersonal skills that
offer greater value when making hiring decisions.
This method goes beyond what someone has done in
the past and illuminates in far greater detail how they
are likely to handle future challenges in the specific
environment in question.
